Several nurses complete their nursing clinical at one hospital and gain employment in the unit. The nurse becomes comfortable knowing no different.
#1 It’s easy to get comfortable
The nurse has become comfortable. It’s a natural occurrence, especially after a huge transition from school to a new career. Many people prefer the familiar. You know what to expect, how to deal with it, and it stays that way. The co-workers became family and the flow of the unit became routine.
#2 Leave your unit if you’re unhappy
Be self aware of your unit. Ask yourself, are you happy? Do you enjoy going to work? Your coworkers? If you said no, why? Is it a coworker? Management? The hospital organization? The patients demographic? Don’t be afraid to accept that your unit is toxic, or you are unhappy with your job. Remember, don’t be loyal to unhappiness. The idea and concept of job loyalty for many industries has become a thing of the past. Job satisfaction and competitive paid are gained through job hopping. The pay increases no longer progress with inflation and the nurse’s worth as they gain experience. Don’t be afraid to leave your unit, don’t burn your bridge, you can always come back.
#3 Nursing is vast
There are so many avenues that one can go into. Inpatient, outpatient, consultant, and the different areas of inpatient and outpatient, such as surgery, oncology, cardiac, neuro, maternity, etc.
Once again, don’t settle for unhappiness in nursing. Be happy. Be healthy. Be sane.
