This past year I made a cross-country move from Nevada to my home state of Connecticut. Along with the typical stress of a move, we also added a new puppy and a new job. Prior to leaving Nevada, I researched and applied to jobs on the east coast. An odd feeling came over me as I input my experience, education, certifications and then I arrived at the asking salary. I asked for a six-figure salary. I do not pick up shifts and I couldn’t believe I was asking for six figures.
#1 We are education
Nurses are well educated. The base education for anyone is an Associate’s Degree. Years ago, there was an option for a certificate that only included nursing classes. The certification program came out of necessary. After WWII, there was a huge nursing shortage to get more nurse trained and into the field in a shorter turn over. The increase of nurses since the 1940s, the United States discontinued the certificate programs. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing in 2019, 56% of nurses had a BSN or higher. Nurses are a well rounded, educated talent pool.
#2 We have experience
It’s incredible how fast time flies. I am approaching seven years as a nurse and I am still learning. It only takes a few years to be considered an experienced nurse. After one to two years in the field, nurse can get a job almost everywhere or move around the facility. Any experience, is experience.
#3 We save lives
In any position held by a nurse, we have a direct and indirect part in their wellbeing. I’ve been in several rapids and codes, some ended with a patient that expired. I’ve witnessed patients at near death on the brink of intubation, and make a full turn around and be able to either go home or to a rehab center. Nurses are a crucial part of our medical system. We spend more time with the patients than the doctors. we advocate for our patients.
When you enter your asking salary on an application, do not underestimate yourself. Fight for your pay. Survey your experience and don’t be afraid to ask for what you are worth.
