Learning Styles

Everyone has different learning styles.  Understanding what way you learn best will help you in finding the method that best lets you study.  The traditional method of teaching, where a teacher stands in front of the class and lectures only works well with some students, but not all students.  Understanding the learning styles will help you figure out what works best for you in your studying. If after reading these you still aren’t sure, you can be a combination of two, you can also find a test that will tell you where you lie in the learning styles.

Visual

A visual learner is one who learns best with visual stimulation.  The stimulation occurs in the occipital lobe during these types of learning sessions.  Students who find they can retain information best when you review charts, graphs, and diagrams are a visual learner.  Some tips to those use color pens, and color coding notes will help to stimulate the brain in this way. Construct charts and place notes a flow chart or diagram.  Use a whiteboard to display vital information.

Auditory

The auditory learner learns best with sounds.  The sounds stimulate the temporal lobe, specifically the right side.  If you notice you seem to take information in that is presented in a rhythm or rhymic, this might include you as well.  Hearing the information, in lecture, in a recording, or in music. Tip for these learners is to record the lectures, place the information in rhyme, song, or rhythm.

Kinesthetic

The person who is considered the hands-on person, the one who finds they learn more from a lab setting then a lecture considers a kinesthetic learner.  The hands-on stimulate the cerebellum and the motor cortex parts of the brain. The tips for this learner is finding ways to bring the information into the world, in a lab situation science classes are usually the best for a number of experiments, visiting a museum, or simulation of some sorts.   

Verbal

A verbal learner uses the temporal and frontal lobes.  The best ways for this learner is to teach. The verbal learner needs to work through the information in some sort of speech.  Being able to review the information either in a recorder or to another person. Verbally explain the information will help this learner to retain the new information.  Some people can also write out notes to achieve the same sense, of review. Rewrite all your notes and review them will also help to retain.
